The drive from Boulder to Vail wasn't long, maybe three hours if we took in some of the Colorado scenery. But as the smiling faces and waving hands grew distant, Sally and I drove off from our wedding, believing we knew exactly where we were going. But in truth, we really didn't fact. Waas, our first trip together as husband and wife, derailed almost a soon as we left the church parking lot. Have you ever looked at a married couple who appeared to have everything going well in their relationship and thought? They seem to get along and clearly love each other? Nothing knocks them off course. I wish I had that kind of marriage. Well, most of us have felt this way at one time or another in 50 years of being married and working with married couples. People have said these things to Sally and me because they see how we relate to each other with mutual love and respect. And perhaps most encouraging is that our four Children and their spouses look to our marriage as a model for their own relationships. We do have a great marriage now, but believe me, in the early days, of our journey together. No one viewed us as the ideal married couple. We stumbled and argued, sometimes wondering what we've gotten ourselves into. We hurt each other and had a hard time making things right. Sally and I discovered quickly that great marriages don't just happen. Couples don't just fall in love and move right into the happily ever after part of the story. You may already know this, but we had to learn it the hard way. What do you mean? You're watching football? It's our honeymoon.
